Watering an African Violet?

I recently bought an African Violet, but have had nothing but problems with it since. The flowers have turned VERY dark and have wilted. I don't know what kind of sunlight it needs (i know indirect, but i don't understand how to get indirect sunlight), and I don't know how to water it. I pour water in the saucer, but the problem is, I don't know how often to water it. Since I'm pouring water in the bottom, the top is always dry, because the water never gets to the top. How do I water it?
