Trench across the Isthmus?

If digging a trench across the Isthmus of Panama would cause widespread flooding on the gulf of Mexico and the eastern seaboard, as stated in an earlier answer,why wouldn't the higher water in the Pacific Ocean just flow around the southern tip of South America and cause the flooding anyway?
